Local veterans can find variety of free services locally

Veterans and active duty military personnel in the La Grande area have a range of free services that are provided by local organizations that I’m eager to tell you about.

Northeast Oregon Public Transit is offering a free unlimited pass to ride the fixed routes in La Grande. You need to show your military ID, Veterans Affairs ID, or VFW or American Legion ID card. For those veterans who do not have any form of veterans ID, the La Grande community has a local ID card for its veterans.  It is an Operation Enduring Support identification. I have them here at the Veterans Service Office or you can get one at Community Connection or the Oregon Employment Office in La Grande.

The ODS College of Dental Sciences offers a limited doctor screening for veterans. It consists of a cleaning, fluoride treatment and radiographs (X-rays). This is open to veterans, active duty military and to the children of active duty military.  The ODS College of Dental Science is located at 909 Adams Ave in La Grande; phone 541-663 2721.

Veterans in need also have their own local food bank available to them. It is sponsored by VFW Post 4060 in Union. I have personally utilized this service to help feed a few veterans and their families and am thoroughly impressed at what is provided. If you need assistance from the food bank or if you care to contribute to it, please call Norm Dixon at 541-562-9321.

The American Legion Post 43 sponsors grants for veterans and active duty in “emergent need.” This provides assistance for life-sustaining needs in addition to the veterans food bank. There is a veterans fund and an active duty family support fund. Needs will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Please call the American Legion Post 43 at 541-963-5141 between the hours of 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The American Legion also provides service assistance for emergency household repairs for spouses and dependents of active duty service members who are deployed and live in the Union County area.

Call me for additional information or to set up an appointment, 541-962-8802. I am located at The Center for Human Development, 2301 Cove Ave., La Grande.

Byron Whipple is the Union County veterans service officer.
