Program helps veterans obtain housing
Program helps veterans obtain housing
|
Warriors, this past week I have been fortunate enough assist five of our local veterans in obtaining housing utilizing a program called HUD-VASH. The Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Veterans Affairs Supported Housing (HUD-VASH) Program provides long-term case management, supportive services and housing support. HUD-VASH provides permanent housing for eligible homeless veterans who are single or with families. Eligible homeless veterans receive VA-provided case management and supportive services to support stability and recovery from physical and mental health, substance use, and functional concerns contributing to or resulting from homelessness. HUD provides Housing Choice Section 8 vouchers designated for HUD-VASH to participating Public Housing Authorities to assist with rent payment. The program goals include promoting maximal veteran recovery and independence to sustain permanent housing in the community for the veteran and the veteran’s family. To be eligible for this program, veterans must be VA Health Care eligible, homeless and agree to participate in case management services, in order to obtain and sustain permanent independent community housing. The following is the definition of homeless pertaining to this program. An individual who lacks a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence, or an individual who has a primary nighttime residence that is • A supervised publicly or privately-operated shelter designed to provide temporary living accommodations, including welfare hotels, congregate shelters, and transitional housing for the mentally ill. • An institution that provides a temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized; or • A public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings. Eligible candidates for the program are expected to participate in case management and utilize the supportive services, treatment recommendations and assistance needed to successfully maintain recovery and sustain housing in the community. I am asking the community to call me if they know of any veteran that is homeless, regardless if they meet the above requirements. The above guidelines are the basics. Call me at 541-962-8802 for more information or to set up an appointment. I am at the Center for Human Development, 2301 Cove Ave., La Grande.
