CHURCH HIGHLIGHTS: Faith Lutheran looks at temptations of Christ

Faith Lutheran looks at temptations of Christ 

ENTERPRISE — In celebration of the beginning of the Lenten season, the service at Faith Lutheran Church will focus on Matthew 4, which tells of Jesus Christ in the desert facing temptations common to humankind. He defeated them with the tool He has given to mankind, the Word of God.

Sunday school is at 8:45 a.m. in La Grande with a Matins Service following. A Divine Service in Enterprise will begin at 2 p.m. 

Faith Lutheran is having Wednesday evening Lenten services at 7 p.m. These services will look at Psalms that are expressive for the sorrow of sin.

“God’s Way or the ‘Other Way’?”

UNION — This week at the Union United Methodist Church, Pastor Sue Peeples will share the message “God’s Way or the ‘Other Way’?” during the 11 a.m. service. Scripture readings will be Matthew 4:1-11 and Genesis 2: 15-17, 3: 1-7.

Fresh Alliance is on Monday at 12:30 p.m. The senior lunch is hosted every Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday evenings prayer meetings run from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Gospel services set in March

Gospel services throughout the month of March will take place from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. each Sunday and from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each Wednesday at Curt’s RV, 62851 Philynda Loop, Island City.

Basketball team visits Church of Christ 

The boys high school basketball team from Columbia Christian Schools will worship this Sunday with the congregation at the La Grande Church of Christ, on their return from the tournament in Baker. Doug Edmonds’ lesson will be “Major League Grace.” Communion is taken every Sunday.

Sunday morning classes are from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., and the worship service follows at 10:30. Children’s Church is offered during the sermon for the little ones. 

On Wednesdays, small groups meet at 7 p.m. at various home locations.

Bible study focuses on Jesus in Jerusalem

ENTERPRISE — The sermon this Sunday during the 11 a.m. worship service at the Enterprise Community Congregational Church will be “Is There Any Good in A,B,C,D-evil?” This question will be answered using Matthew 4:1-11.

The Sunday morning “Challenge of Jesus” Bible study continues at 9:30 a.m. with a close look at “Jesus in Jerusalem.”

Two services will be
offered Saturday 

COVE — Saturday morning, Pastor Mike will lead a sharing time and testimony service beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Cove Seventh-day Adventist Church. At the 11 a.m. service in La Grande, a guest speaker will address the congregation: Braden Way will present a message titled “Repairers of the Breach.” 

St. Peter’s serves Lenten soup supper

 St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande will observe the first Sunday of Lent with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside and preach.

The book club will meet Sunday evening at 6 in the parish hall. Morning Prayer is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel. A midweek Eucharist is offered Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m., also in the chapel.

Also this week, a Lenten soup supper will be served on Wednesday, March 12, at 6 p.m. in the parish hall, followed by a selection from “Glorious Companions: Five Centuries of Anglican Spirituality” by Richard H. Schmidt, a compendium of religious biographies of significant figures in Anglicanism. All are welcome.

On Friday, March 14, St. Ann’s Guild will hold its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. in the parish hall.

Community fellowship dinners continue 

Pastor Keith Hudson will lead the 9:30 worship service Sunday morning at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. On this first Sunday of Lent, the sermon will be “Giving Up Control,” based on Genesis 2:15-17 and Matthew 4:1-11. Fellowship follows the service.

The Wednesday Night Community Fellowship dinner continues this week, with service beginning at 6 p.m.

Seelhoffs’ anniversary celebrated in Cove 

COVE — This week Grace Community Lutheran Church will celebrate God’s word with a worship service beginning at 10 a.m. The sermon will be “The Word of God.”

Prior to the service, Sunday Bible studies for all ages begins at 9. A fellowship potluck following the service will recognize Pastor Carl and JoAnn Seelhoff’s 50th wedding anniversary. They were married March 7, 1964, in Sanford, Mich. Joining them at the 11:30 a.m. potluck will be their four children and 11 grandchildren.

All activities are held at the Cove Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Don’t miss rummage sale at Our Lady of the Valley

Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, at the corner of K Avenue and Fourth Street, will host a rummage sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Extra savings will be offered beginning at noon, when each bag of found treasures goes for $1.
