The First Friday Concert Series sponsored by The Eastern Oregon Folklore Society will be held at The Olde Meetinghouse, 901 M Avenue.

The 7 to 8 p.m. time slot is reserved for Open Mike, a new feature of the First Friday Concert. Acoustic and family-friendly selections are welcome. Please sign up over phone by tonight. If interested in participating, call 663-0776.

Then from 8-9 p.m. the featured entertainment, The Blarney Cats of Walla Walla, will perform Celtic music. Band members are Larry Dickerson on Uliean pipes, penny whistle, fiddle, mandola, mandolin; Jon St. Hillaire pn guitar; and Trudy Ostby on fiddle.

Originally from Vermont, St. Hilaire is now a full-time guitar teacher at Whitman College in Walla Walla. He sings and plays a wide variety of musical styles including bluegrass, jazz, folk and swing music.

Ostby, from Milton-Freewater, has been playing violin since she was a child and not only works part time for the Walla Walla Symphony but plays in it as well. She plays many styles of music on the violin including classical, bluegrass, jazz, contra dances, swing music and more.

A builder in the Walla Walla area, Dickerson plays several musical styles and instruments from around the world including Irish, South American, Balkan and gospel bluegrass.

The Blarney Cats have been playing music together for many years and have frequently been seen playing for dances, coffee houses, weddings and school concert series. The band will play a variety of music. Not only will they crank out some of the old jigs, reels and hornpipes, but a fusion of newer stuff as well.

Admission is $5; members, $3; children 12 and under admitted free.

Open mike participants get in for half price.

First Friday concerts will take place Nov. 1, Dec. 6, Jan. 3, Feb. 7, March 7, April 4 and May 2.

Open mike participants must sign up by the Thursday evening before the Friday concert.
