CLOWN AROUND AT ARTS FOR ALL

Albert Alter hopes to run for political office when he grows up so there will finally be a professional clown in government.

Until then the former assistant director of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Baily clown college will have to make do with fire-eating, miming and being an all around funny guy.

Arts For All will bring the clown, music and art activities for children to the Blue Mountain Conference Center, 404 12th St., Friday and Saturday.

Alter, who considers himself a physical comedian, will entertain at as Clem, with "Look What I Found in the Basement," a show combining magic, juggling, rolla-bolla, object balancing, physical comedy and audience participation.

More clowns will wander through the building making balloon animals, while children will be invited to participate in an array of artistic endeavors that includes jewelry making, wood sculpture, ditto art, karaoke, parachutes, print making, recycled art, portraits, tie-dye, computer art, clay pottery, costume design, face painting, a painting wall, paper weaving, puppets, rock animals, spinner art and wire sculpture.

The event will open with activities for children with special needs and for pre-schoolers from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Alters will entertain from 12:30 to 1 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. at La Grande High School.

Art activities for teens, sponsored by the Eastern Oregon University Art Club, will begin at 5 p.m. and a teenage battle of the bands begins at 6 p.m.

Eastern Oregon University's theater department will put on the children's play "The Wind in the Willows" in the evening, also at LHS. Admission will be $2.50. Adults accompanied by their children will be admitted free.

On Saturday art activities will be available for all children from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Alters will entertain again from noon to 1 p.m.

A concession stand will be open both days.

FRIDAY, 6 p.m. — Teenage Battle of the Bands

6:30 p.m., Albert Alters, LHS

SATURDAY, 10 a.m. to noon — Art activities for children; noon to 1 p.m., Albert Alters; 1 to 3 p.m., art activities for children
