LA GRANDE - The Union County Timber Cruisers Car Club will host its first Grande Ronde-A-View Weekend, featuring cruises for cash, a barbecue picnic and a vintage and classic vehicle show and swap meet — all sponsored by Legacy Ford of La Grande. The fun begins from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 13, with a cruise-in sponsored by Baxter Auto Parts and Safeway. Cruising registrants will meet at the parking lot at Safeway in La Grande and travel a route up and down Adams Avenue. Music will be provided by KOOL 106 FM at the Texaco Station, and the sponsors will give away door prizes to winning registrants. Hot dogs and drinks will be sold. All proceeds will go to support research on breast cancer. During Saturday’s Elgin RiverFest, the car club will host a “Show and Shine” car show and swap meet next to the Elgin Community Center, 260 N. 10th Ave., from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. “We have 20-plus registrants from out of the county registered to show their vehicles. Some are from southern California, the Oregon coast, Bend, Sisters, Seattle, two or three from Washington and also Twin Falls, Idaho,” said event organizer Arlan Miesner of La Grande. Music will be provided throughout the day by KOOL 106 FM, and Poppie’s concessions will be on hand to sell food and drinks to those in attendance. Other activities will include a Poker Walk and raffle. Any auto-related vendors who sell products, services or parts are also welcome to register with the club and participate. As a courtesy, the car club has made arrangements with Community Connection to provide free shuttle service to and from the various RiverFest activity sites in Elgin. On Saturday at 5:30 p.m. the public is invited to a barbecue at Pioneer Park in La Grande catered by Grande Cuisine of Elgin. Each registrant will receive two free meal tickets. The public can purchase meal tickets for $5 each and enjoy a leisurely view of the classic vehicles. From 7 to 9 p.m. the action goes downtown, as KOOL 106 FM sets up at the Texaco Station and car owners cruise for cash. Cash awards will be given out every 15 minutes at the Texaco Station. “I’d like to see a lot of people downtown Saturday night to enjoy the fun and watch the cars cruising down Adams Avenue,” said Miesner. At 10 a.m. Sunday, car registrants will gather at the Safeway parking lot where they will enjoy doughnuts and coffee and organize for a poker cruise around the Grande Ronde Valley. Along the route, they will make stops at seven businesses where each participant will draw one card from a deck. The best five cards will make a hand, and several awards will be given out for the best hands. The route will start at Safeway and go to Imbler, Summerville, Elgin, Cove, Union and end up at Hot Lake where they will be given a tour of the historic hot springs sanatorium. “We really want to thank Legacy Ford, our presenting sponsor, for their support,” said Miesner. We also want to thank Hot Lake, The Observer and Janet Dodson of Union County Tourism for their advertising support. Also we’d like to thank Baxter Auto Parts, Safeway and KOOL 106 FM along with other business donors for their support and prizes.” All profits from the weekend will be given to Mount Emily Safe Center. Anyone who is interested in registering as a vendor or car exhibitor for the weekend events can call Miesner at 963-9025. Registrations will be accepted as late as June 14. |
