"What started years ago with the Grande Ronde Model Water Shed's interest in protecting the river, fish and environment, progressed into the community entertainment it is today," said Al Smolkowski of the Elgin Lions Club. "The Elgin 2010 group took over from there and made it into a community celebration. The Lions have sponsored it for the past nine years," said Lions membership chairperson Janet Stafford. Riverfest has been growing steadily since then with new vendors joining the calendar of events. For the first time this year, the excursion train will blow its horn in the celebration too. "Riverfest typically coincides with the weekend when the alumni come back to Elgin for their reunions, and some of them may be riding the train, I would imagine," said Stafford. The 51-rail-mile excursion includes a lunch and a scenic view of the canyon country to Minam. The train departs from Elgin on Saturday at 10 a.m. and returns at 3 p.m. Tickets are available through Alegre Travel in La Grande at 541-963-9000 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it The Lions welcome families, alumni and other visitors to enjoy the fun, food and entertainment at the 2007 Elgin Riverfest in downtown Elgin.
