JAZZ COMBOS PAY TRIBUTE TO HAMPTON MONDAY
|
The Eastern Jazz Combos will perform a tribute to Lionel Hampton on their fall concert, Monday at 7:30 p.m. in McKenzie Theatre. Hampton, a leading jazz bandleader, drummer and vibraphonist, died Aug. 31 at the age of 93. The 3:00 and 4:00 combos, directed by Matt Cooper, will perform Hampton's "Midnight Sun," "Flying Home" and "Red Top." The combos will also perform Billy Strayhorn's "Take the A' Train" (associated with the Duke Ellington band); Belgian guitarist Django Reinhardt's "Nuages" ("Clouds"); Horace Silver's Latin influenced "Nutville"; and saxophonist Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar." Admission to the concert is one non-perishable food item, to benefit hungry families in Union County. |
