MIDVALLEY THEATRE TARGETS COMEDY WITH NEW NEIL SIMON PRODUCTION

MidValley Theatre Co., Wallowa County's only "professional amateur" theater group, begins its 2003 season with a production of Neil Simon's comedy-drama, "Brighton Beach Memoirs" opening March 28.

The play is the first in Simon's semi-autobiographical trilogy and is set in Brooklyn's Brighton Beach area in New York, 1937. Dealing with a poor immigrant family, it runs the gamut from hilarious comedy (the "memoirs" of a teen-age boy) to serious drama (two families under one roof, opposing goals).

"Only Neil Simon can give us such a blend of wild comedy and intense drama, and ‘Brighton Beach' is the best of the best," said Kate Loftus, director. "This is MidValley's first incursion into serious drama, and though a comedy this piece explores a sometimes very difficult subject, family

conflict."

Though there is no violence, emotions run high. Consequently, the show is not recommended for children under 12.

Another new twist to the theater group's production is an elevated stage depicting the teenager's

bedrooms.

"This, also, is innovative to the theater space," Loftus said, "and, like the revolve in ‘I Remember Mama' (2001), gives a different aspect to the stage area."

Members of the cast include actors from all over the Wallowa Valley: Craig Strobel, Ame Leggett, Bryce Johnson, Brendan Leggett, June Colony, Jessica Morehouse and Tressie Anderson.

Opening night is March 28 with curtain going up at 7 p.m. Seating is limited, so theater-goers should get to the South Fork Grange in Lostine early for good seats. Following the first show there will be a reception with refreshments for the audience and cast.

Subsequent performances will be March 29, April 4 and April 5 at 7 p.m., and two matinees March 30 and April 6 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door.
