(Submitted photos). - Joyce Osterloh Correspondent ENTERPRISE Hells Canyon Mule Days, in its 26th year, is set to open at the Wallowa County Fairgrounds Friday. The show runs through Sunday. Started in 1981 by the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce and the Forest Service, the celebration honors mules and muleskinners for the energy and capability that helped to settle and develop much of the rugged area of the county. This show and competition is the fastest growing mule show in the Northwest and has expanded to three full days this year. Sondra Lozier, show organizer, said that "everything is looking great'' for this year's show with lots of new contestants and vendors. Highlights of the events and show include the Jump Off Challenge, pole bending, barrel racing, mule and donkey races, and the Fast Ass Express. Don't miss the packers' scramble, wild cow milking, flapjack race and the mystery races. Tennessee mule artist Bonnie Shields from Sandpoint, Idaho, will be on the Green exhibiting her art and Bullwhackin' Kass, also known as Sheryl Curtis, brings her oxen and freighter wagon to share her artifacts and knowledge of life in camp 150 years ago. The Max Walker Memorial Cowboy Poetry Gathering is scheduled for Friday night. Don't miss the cowboy stories, poetry and music of the Old West. The grand marshal for the 2007 Hells Canyon Mule Days is Blanche Maxwell. Her family moved to Wallowa County from the Dakotas in the early 1930s and lived on a ranch east of Joseph. She graduated from Enterprise High School and was princess of the Wallowa County Fair Court in 1946, princess of the Elgin Stampede Court in 1947, princess of the Chief Joseph Days Court in 1947, princess of the Lewiston Roundup in 1948 and queen of the Redneck Roundup in 2000. She is an accomplished horse-woman and has spent many hours in the saddle working as a seasonal recreation specialist for the Forest Service. She received the Ranger buckle for her years of service in 1991.
