LA GRANDE - More than 100 dancers will be representing nearly every age and culture imagined on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in EOU’s McKenzie Theatre. Beckie’s Studio of Dance presents “The Wonderful World of Dance” in the studio’s 28th annual Spring Review. Last year Beckie Thompson-Hendrickson traveled to Eastern Europe and attended a three-day international dance festival. “This is where I got my idea for our show,” Thompson-Hendrickson said. “I’ve always wanted to do dance around the world and although we haven’t quite accomplished that, we have come really close.”In the beginning of the school year Thompson-Hendrickson presented the idea to her students and they loved it. “So the next thing we did was get out the world globe and books (old-fashioned way versus Internet) and then we explored all different kinds of music from many countries.” The show will have Chinese Dragon dancers, Mexican hat dancers, Brazilian farm girls, Egyptian dancers, Klompers (in tap shoes) from Netherlands, Bollywood dancers from India, Mediterranean princesses, Bavarian fairies, Flamenco dancers and many, many more including some from the United States. Each and every number includes original choreography combining traditional styles with the fundamentals of ballet, tap and modern jazz. Featured entertainers include the EOU theatre dance class, which will be performing several numbers. One of those numbers is an Irene Ryan Award nominee doing an operetta with extreme physical theatre performed by Erin Kinzer and Taylor Stanley. Also featured are two of La Grande High School seniors, Amy Yoder and Emily Butler. Both young women had leads in this year’s LHS musical production of “Anything Goes.” Butler has also served as a student teacher for the last two years at Beckie’s Studio. Thompson-Hendrickson, the director and instructor, and her assistant director and instructor Betsy Strandberg said they are very excited for this year’s show. It has been a wonderful experience, both challenging and rewarding,” Thompson-Hendrickson said. Tickets available at the door are $8 for teens and adults, $6 for those 12 and younger, and free for those younger than 2. |
