deVILLIER LEADS OFF NIGHTINGALE SEASON

An exhibition of the work of painter, sculptor and teacher David deVillier, "Eclectic Moments and Attitudes of Time," will lead off the 2004-05 season at Nightingale Gallery.

The gallery in Loso Hall on the campus of Eastern Oregon University begins the season on Saturday.

According to the Linda Hughes Gallery, deVillier's paintings show his trademark eclectic arrangements. Enigmatic figures, musical instruments, chairs, boats and flowers — all function in alternately playful and disquieting dramas often set against a cloudy sky.

The paintings' intermixed colors, painterly surfaces and varied textures engage the senses and result in intriguing compositions that are somewhat cubist in feeling and uniquely American in subject.

This symbolism is a product of his childhood in Opelousas, La., a Cajun region, and his interest in Native American mythology of the Northwest.

In discussing his art, deVillier says, "I like to depict situations that are quietly dramatic, curious — sometimes satirical, often mysterious — which are intended to challenge and seduce viewers into creating, questioning or remembering personal narratives."

deVillier received his bachelor of fine arts degree from Louisiana State University in 1983 and a master of fine arts from Yale University in 1987.

He has exhibited widely from California to Washington, and in 1996 he was awarded an Oregon Arts Fellowship.
