Fishing Report for November 29, 2013

Here is the weekly fishing report for selected areas in and around Southeast Oregon, provided by fisheries biologists for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

ANTHONY LAKE: rainbow trout, brook trout

The lake was stocked with trophy-sized rainbow trout the week of Aug. 6. Fishing has been fair.

BURNS POND: trout, bass

The pond remains full and water temperatures are good for fall fishing. It was recently stocked with legal-sized rainbow trout. Twenty tagged fish are in the pond. If you capture a tagged fish return the tag to the Hines office (237 Hwy 20 S) for a prize.

COTTONWOOD MEADOWS: rainbow trout, brook trout

Fishing should be good for legal (8 to 11-inches) rainbow trout. Anglers also have the opportunity to catch brook trout up to 14-inches and rainbow trout over 20-inches. Winter weather will soon block access to this lake, but fishing can be excellent for fall fish that feed voraciously to put on fat for the winter.

FISH LAKE (Steens Mountain): rainbow trout, brook trout

Fishing has been good for stocked rainbow trout. The lake has received a significant amount of snow and rain over the last few weeks. Access may be challenging due to snow or muddy road conditions.

FISH LAKE (Wallowa Mountains): rainbow trout, brook trout

The lake was stocked with legal-sized rainbow trout in June. The water level is low and fishing for rainbow and brook trout is expected to be fair.

GRANDE RONDE LAKE: rainbow trout, brook trout

The lake was last stocked in July with legal-sized rainbow trout. With cool water temperatures fishing should be good for the remaining stocked rainbows.

HAINES POND: rainbow

The pond received a fall stocking of legal and trophy-sized rainbow trout the week of Sept. 23.

LOST RIVER: largemouth bass, brown bullhead, yellow perch

Fishing is slow for brown bullhead at Crystal Springs Day use area. Largemouth bass and yellow perch are also available and fishing is slow. Boats can be launched at Crystal Springs and at the ODOT Mitigation Wetland off Highway 140 just east of Olene. Fishing for largemouth bass should be slow in the vicinity of Big Springs in Bonanza.

MALHEUR RESERVOIR: hatchery rainbow trout

The water level is dropping, and is less than a third full. Legal size trout were released into the reservoir last week. The boat ramp is challenging to use. Anglers are still catching fish. ODFW currently has no plans to remove the bag limit on the reservoir. Orchards Irrigation District has reported the reservoir will be 10 to 20 percent full at the end of irrigation season.

MALHEUR RIVER (Warm Springs Reservoir downstream to South Fork Malheur River): redband trout and hatchery rainbow trout

Water releases from Warm Springs Reservoir remain at 0. Fishing the Riverside area is expected to be fair.

MALHEUR RIVER (from the South Fork Malheur River near Riverside, downstream to Gold Creek): redband trout and hatchery rainbow trout.

Discharge at Juntura averaged 7 cfs on Nov. 12. No recent fishing reports.

MALHEUR RIVER, NORTH FORK: redband trout, whitefish, and bull trout

Fishing for redband trout should be good.

MALHEUR RIVER, MIDDLE FORK: redband trout, brook trout, and bull trout

Fishing for trout is fair to good. Flows have picked up in the river due to recent rainstorms.

NORTH POWDER POND: rainbow trout

The pond received a fall stocking of legal and trophy-sized rainbow trout the week of Sept. 23.

PILCHER RESERVOIR:

Closed to fishing Oct. 31.

POWDER RIVER: trout, spring chinook

Catch-and-release fishing with flies and lures is now allowed through April 25, 2014, from Hughes Lane in Baker City, upstream to Mason Dam. All other reaches of the Powder River and tributaries are closed to fishing. The reach immediately below Mason Dam is now near the winter minimum flow, but should supply anglers with good opportunity for holdover stocked trout or native trout.

THIEF VALLEY RESERVOIR: trout

The reservoir was drained by the Lower Powder River Irrigation District in early September, meaning a near 100 percent loss of trout in the reservoir. The reservoir was restocked with sub-legal sized rainbow trout the first week of November. These fish are not expected to be up to harvestable size until the spring of 2014.
