Friends of NRA banquet set Saturday

It is quickly becoming one of the most successful firearm education and safety organizations of its kind in Oregon.

This year the organization’s annual big night is fast approaching.

The Grande Ronde Chapter of Friends of the National Rifle Association will conduct  its annual fundraising banquet Saturday at the Blue Mountain Conference Center. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6.

The 2011 Grande Ronde Chapter of Friends of the NRA banquet raised a net of $25,000. This was at least the second straight year the chapter had topped the $25,000 mark.

In 2010 the organization’s fundraising total was the fourth highest of the then 27 Friends of NRA chapters in the state.

The Nov. 17 banquet will include a live auction, silent auction and special drawings. Items to be sold include limited edition firearms, custom knives and NRA limited edition custom art works.

Dinner tickets are $40. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Friends of the NRA raises funds to support a wide range of firearm-related public interest activities. It provides grants to organizations and programs that promote firearm and hunting safety; enhance marksmanship skills of those participating in shooting sports; and educates the public about firearms in their historical, technological and artistic context.

Over the past two years, Friends of the NRA has provided grants to the following in Union and Wallowa counties:

• The La Grande Gun Club and the La Grande Rifle and Pistol Club, which received grant money to improve their ranges.

• The Powder River Pistoleros, which received grant money to rebuild and expand its riding arena and make range improvements at the Union County Fairgrounds. The Powder River Pistoleros is a Cowboy Mounted Shooting group that has performed during the Union County Fair and sometimes uses it for practice sessions.
