More than 600 firefighters are involved in suppression efforts this week on the 1,090-acre Mule Peak forest fire burning 20 miles southeast of La Grande
The lightning-caused fire, fueled by subalpine fir, started eight days ago. It is located mainly in the Eagle Cap Wilderness.
Helicopters are being used to support suppression activities on the fire line and also to provide logistical support at two spike camps. The main fire camp is in Union.
Fire officials say the immediate goal is to keep the fire from spreading to the Minam and Elk Creek drainages.
Area residents are invited to a fire camp open house at the Union athletic complex 1 to 4 p.m. today and Saturday.
