Window at Faith Lutheran proclaims Triune God
Faith Lutheran Church on the corner of 12th and Gekeler in La Grande has an artistic window proclaiming the Triune God to people as they enter and exit the church.
This stained glass window over the front door was provided for with memorial monies received in remembrance of Beverly Frasch and Michael Moschkau.
Beverly Frasch had lived in Joseph. She was instrumental in encouraging and supporting Wallowa County Worship Services through Faith Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Beverly was also involved in many other community activities in Wallowa County. Some of Beverly’s family lives in Wallowa County, and she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Frasch.Michael had lived in La Grande. Michael was vision-impaired, yet even with his disability, Michael received an automotive degree and graduated from Eastern Oregon University. Michael had served as trustee and chairman for Faith Lutheran. Michael was the son of Leroy and Diane Moschkau of La Grande.
The window has symbolism representing Christianity’s Triune God. The first image (left side) represents God the Father’s hands of Providence. The stained glass has two hands providing the earth with life. It is on this planet that Jesus Christ performed His saving work. God has created all things. It is customary to think of God the Father as we consider God’s creative power.
The middle image has the cross of Jesus Christ. It is through the cross of Christ — His innocent suffering and death — that forgiveness of sin is won. The cross is a golden glory representing the great wealth of His work.
The third image (to the right) represents the Holy Spirit as a dove. At Jesus’ baptism we learn that “…the Holy Spirit descended on Him (Jesus) in bodily form like a dove” (Luke 3:22). The dove is white representing the cleansing that believers receive through the Spirit’s sanctifying work.
These three images are connected with a vine showing the agreement within the three Persons of God being the One True God.
The artists for this project were Ross Chesley and Jim Maier of Joseph. Jim donated most of the glass for the window.
They both began working on the project, yet Jim had to move to an advisory role due to a medical condition. Therefore, Ross did the actual cutting and assembling along with much of the design.
Ross and Jim have done many other stained glass windows that can be found in Eastern Oregon as well as other areas of the country.
Faith Lutheran Church is pleased to have this window to help proclaim the unifying teaching of all Christian churches — the Triune God. We trust that this artwork will be a blessing through proclamation in visual art to all who enter into this gathering place of Faith Lutheran Church and as they go into their mission fields of life.
