Multiple fire starts on the Vale District
VALE — Multiple lightning strikes in the western portion of the Bureau of Land Management’s Vale District Monday results in multiple fires.
The biggest of the fires is the Crowley Fire and is located 5 miles due east of Stockade Mountain in Malheur County. Engine-crews bulldozers, water-tenders, hand crews and a helicopter have engaged the fire. Winds have pushed the fire to more than 3,000 acres. Winds and terrain continue to effect the fire and by 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, the fire had grown to approximately 4,500 acres. Additional resources have been ordered for this fire.
The South Fork Fires — five small fires totaling approximately 1,500 acres — is located on State Lands in Harney County near the South Fork of the Malheur River. BLM provides fire protection to state lands in this area. Engine crews are fighting these fires and are making progress. Currently, engines and crews are holding the fires, but, if needed, additional resources will be ordered.
Air resources will be patrolling for additional fires that may be smoldering and have not been detected as winds Tuesday afternoon are expected to increase throughout the area.
