Rifle stolen from trooper's car recovered
A Colt M16A1 semi-automatic rifle stolen from a locked Oregon State Police trooper’s patrol car in La Grande was recovered Sunday morning at a local area residence after La Grande police followed up on a tip phoned in to their department.
Police announced the arrest in a press release Monday afternoon.
A 16-year old juvenile male was lodged by the Union County Juvenile Department in connection with the investigation.
OSP was notified around 5 a.m. Sunday by La Grande Police Department that the rifle was found at a residence after a relative of the juvenile suspect called to report finding a rifle part in a bedroom. The caller was aware of the reported rifle theft when they called police. After arriving at the residence, La Grande police found the rest of the rifle and other evidence associated with the vehicle break-in and theft.
The juvenile’s name is not being released at this time.
The vehicle, which was parked in the vicinity of 11th Street and M Avenue in La Grande, was broken into between 4:30 p.m. Feb. 28 and 8:30 a.m. March 1. The firearm was in a mounted locked bracket when it was stolen, according to an OSP report. The inside of the car was accessed by smashing in a window.
