Tribute to Veterans

Parade, ceremonies will mark Veterans Day throughout N.E. Oregon

Baker City

Veteran Jim Thomas will speak on the topic of “Respecting Veterans” during a Veterans Day service Monday at the veterans memorial at the Baker County Courthouse.

The event, which will begin at
11 a.m., will include a presentation of the flags by veterans organizations. There will be a free lunch served for veterans after the Veterans Day service.

Greg Lonewolf, a U.S. Army veteran who served in combat operations in Somalia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq, will be the guest speaker at an event honoring all veterans planned for Sunday at Harvest Church, 3720 Birch St. in Baker City. The service will start at 6 p.m.

Lonewolf, who lives in Garden Valley, Idaho, with his wife and son, is the founder of Retired Shooter.

The organization’s focus includes writing and speaking to veterans, any time and any place, educating communities about veterans’ needs, and donating to help veterans with housing, education and employment.

Jane Chandler, Baker County Veterans Services officer, will be master of ceremonies.

Royal Rangers Outpost 97 and local Boy Scouts will present the colors, followed by the “Star Spangled Banner,” Pledge of Allegiance and patriotic hymns.

The event is hosted by Harvest Church and sponsored by the Northeast Oregon Compassion Center.

Eastern Oregon University

Veterans Day at Eastern Oregon University will be commemorated with two events — one honoring those who have served and another highlighting a new resource for veteran students.

Members of the university and  community are invited to a Remembrance Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the flagpole on University Boulevard between Pierce Library and Badgley Hall.

EOU President Bob Davies and Lt. Col. Richard McKim will make remarks and Jim Lundy will give the invocation.

An open house at EOU’s recently established Veterans Resource Center also begins at 10 a.m. Situated in the daylight basement in Inlow Hall, Room 007, the center provides students with a quiet place to study, access to computers and other materials.

The open house continues until    2 p.m. All are invited to tour the new center, visit with veteran students and enjoy refreshments including donuts, coffee, pizza and soda.

Wallowa County
