Cattle feed Monday in Union County. Even if the worst of cold weather has passed, weather still is a concern for agriculture producers as potential exists for warmth, run-off and flooding, according to Jennifer Isley of the USDA’s La Grande office. (PHIL BULLOCK/The Observer)

Following some unusually harsh weather conditions this winter, the local office of the United States Department of Agriculture is urging farmers to document any crop or livestock losses.

Beginning in early December, Oregon saw a long-enduring cold snap featuring record low temperatures. Jennifer Isley of the USDA’s La Grande office said that while damages don’t appear to be widespread in Union County, she wants to make sure local farmers understand the importance of recording any losses. Without that proof, producers could lose eligibility for USDA programs.

SMALL BUSINESS HAPPENINGS: Clapp moves media services business

LA GRANDE — Brent Clapp Media Services has gone from home-based business to storefront enterprise, taking up quarters at 2010 Island Ave.

Clapp, who has lived in La Grande the past 15 years, offers videoproduction and photography services. His credits include national television shows, and productions for local corporate clients. He has filmed shows for “Steve’s Outdoor Adventures,” an Outdoors Channel program hosted by Steve West of La Grande.

In addition to video production and photography, Clapp helps people convert old media to new media, such as video tape to DVD, or conversion of bulk photographs to digital files. Services also include video streaming of live events such as sporting events, weddings and funerals.

To celebrate his move to the Island Avenue location, Clapp plans a grand opening Friday. He will be offering free Valentine’s Day portraits to singles and small groups.

Before moving to La Grande, Clapp studied media production at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, and taught videography and photography at that school.

He started his media services business in 2010, working out of his La Grande home. He said he is moving the business to the retail location in order to provide customers with better access to his services.
