More people with a yen to travel will be getting a look at what Eastern Oregon has to offer, thanks to a grant from the Oregon Tourism Commission.

Even some in Europe.

Tuesday in La Grande, the commission, which does business as Travel Oregon, presented a check for $10,000 to the Eastern Oregon Visitors Association, a group that cooperatively markets the region to the tourist industry.

EOVA Executive Director Alice Trindle said part of the money, with matching funds, will be used to buy the EOVA some exposure in a 13-episode television series being produced by Travel Oregon for the European Travel Channel.

"It's a special deal Travel Oregon has put together," Trindle said. "We put a little money towards it so Eastern Oregon will get a number of mentions in a number of episodes."

She said that in addition to what appears on the air, DVDs of the episodes will include contact information for the regional entities taking part: Union County Tourism, the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce, Visit Baker and the national Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center.

Those groups often team in cooperative advertising, said EOVA President Janet Dodson.

"We represent a big region and funds are tight," Dodson said.

The remainder of the grant will be used, also with matching funds, to buy cooperative ads in Via and Journey — magazines published for Oregon and Washington by AAA — and for ads in Bend Living and Cascade East.

The latter two magazines are aimed at Central Oregon audiences. Dodson said exposure in them should reap great benefits.

"In Central Oregon, there's growing interest in our region," she said."When we pool our advertising money, it's the difference between being able to buy a full-page magazine ad and a one-sixth of a page. There's a lot more impact."

Travel Oregon presented a check to EOVA at Tuesday's meeting of the Northeast Oregon Area Commission on Transportation at Oregon Department of transportation Region 5 headquarters.

The EOVA's Cooperative Advertising Project was one of 16 successful grant applicants.
