Children receive free eye exams

The clinic donated about 20 free exams to local school chldren. BILL RAUTENSTRAUCH/The Observer Optometrist Nathan Frank said he and his staff arranged to donate the exams after hearing about a similar program at the clinic at the Hermiston Walmart store. “It was just an idea we had. We’re giving kids who might not have the opportunity for an exam the chance to come in and get checked,” Frank said. The clinic worked with local schools to set up the appointments. Children were selected based on financial need.They all received a full work-up, were evaluated for visual acuity, color and depth perception, and more. Health concerns that relate to eye health were evaluated as well. “Hopefully, they’ll enjoy the experience, and if they need a prescription, we’ll write it,” Frank said. The exams would normally cost $70, he said. Frank, a graduate of Pacific University’s optometry school, has worked at the Island City Walmart since September 2008. He oversees a staff of four. He also works a couple of days a week at the Walmart clinic in Pendleton. |
