Council to meet with Oregon Food Bank
Wallowa County Food System Council hosts strategic planning session Monday
ENTERPRISE — The Wallowa County Food System Council is hosting a half-day strategic planning session Monday with Sharon Thornberry and Matt Buck of the Oregon Food Bank.
The planning session is from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Prairie Center, 104 Litch St. in Enterprise.
The session will highlight accomplishments from food system work over the past year and define future actions to strengthen local food production, community/school gardens, and development and collaboration among farmers markets.
The council’s efforts are based on the findings of the 2012 Wallowa County Community Food Assessment, available online at http://tinyurl.com/wcfoodassessment. Anyone interested in working together to improve access to healthy local food is encouraged to attend the session.
Facilitator Thornberry will lead participants through food system planning activities. Thornberry was the 2009 recipient of the Billi Odegard Public Health Genius Award from the Community Health Partnership of Oregon. Much of her work in the past seven years has been focused on the rural
Speaker Buck will share examples of successful food system work that are relevant to the Wallowa County goals. He has many years experience consulting with groups working to strengthen local and regional food systems.
Buck is knowledgeable about community kitchen and food business incubator projects, funding resources for food/farm businesses, and sustainable agriculture models and marketing.
Recently he has been involved in helping Meyer Memorial Trust evaluate the work of eight regional food system projects across Oregon, including the Northeast Oregon Collaborative.
The Wallowa County Food System Council includes farmers, ranchers and consumers, as well as representatives of Slow Food Wallowas, Wallowa County Farmers Market, Lower Valley Farmers Market, the Magic Garden, Community Connection, June’s Local Market and Northeast Oregon Economic Development District.
