First place safety award goes to Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative

Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative earned a first-place safety award at the Northwest Public Power Association’s Engineering and Operations Conference April 1. The safety contest awards are based upon a review of each utility’s safety contest form, the number of recordable injury and illness cases in 2009, and the lost work days in 2009. “Our employees’ safety recognition and good work habits are on a positive uphill climb with true effort being exerted to work safer,” said Ned Ratterman, OTEC manager of loss control. He said OTEC’s safety record over the past few years is outstanding because of each employee making good decisions on a regular basis when confronted with potential hazards.According to an NWPPA press release, safety continued to be a top priority in 2009 among utilities. The organization said there was no decline in the number of utilities that worked hard to maintain or improve their safety records. For the second consecutive year, OTEC earned first place in the “160,001 to 240,000 hours of exposure” category. “In our industry, we cannot afford to be complacent. The more we educate employees about safety the better we position ourselves and our families to prevent accidents,” Ratterman said. NWPPA is an international association representing and serving customer-owned, locally controlled utilities in the Western U.S. and Canada.
