Models for ways to retain and attract young people in rural areas will be the focus of an upcoming workshop.

Craig Schroeder of the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship will present the workshop in three Northeast Oregon locations.

Schroeder, a senior associate at the center, is known for his work helping communities improve opportunities for young people who want to remain in or come back to their hometowns.

The center is a national research and policy center with the mission of building more prosperous economies in rural America through entrepreneurship.

It was created in 2001 with founding support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Rural Policy Research Institute.

The free workshop will be held in Baker City on Feb. 28, Enterprise on March 1 and La Grande on March 2.

From 9:30 a.m. to noon, Schroeder will describe youth retention and attraction programs across the nation and the roles youth businesses play in economic development strategies.

In the afternoon, from 1:30 to 4:30, workshop participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and look at ways to incorporate youth-focused activities into economic development plans in Baker, Wallowa and Union counties.

Everyone with an interest in youth retention is encouraged to attend one of the workshops. Early registration is also encouraged.

The Feb. 28 Baker City workshop will be held in the Blue Mountain Room at Sunridge Inn.

The March 1 Enterprise workshop will be held in Toma's Room, Wallowa Mountain Properties Building.

The March 2 La Grande workshop will take place in Room 153, Integrated Services Building

The Region 13 WorkSource Oregon Workforce Investment Board and Northeast Oregon Economic Development District are co-hosting Schroeder's visit.
