3 blazes erupt as fire season lingers
Small wildfires break out on Mt. Emily Road, Glass Hill and Dial Road
Three small wildfires broke out in Union County on Saturday, highlighting the fact that dry conditions in the woods continue and there’s still a need to take precautions.
Andy Tarvin of the Oregon Department of Forestry said his agency helped the La Grande Rural Fire Protection District with a blaze that broke out Saturday on Mt. Emily Road. The fire spread from an unattended campfire, Tarvin said.
Also on Saturday, someone touched off a fire in a slash pile on Glass Hill, and careless smoking is thought to be the cause of a blaze near Dial Road west of Summerville. All fires were quickly contained.
No injuries or significant property damage was reported, but Tarvin said the incidents point up the need for care.
“It’s very dry out there and it’s not taking much to start a fire. We need people to be careful,” he said.
An Oregon Department of Forestry bulletin said weather forecasters are predicting continued warm, dry weather over the next two weeks. Fire season will remain in effect until significant precipitation occurs.
Union County has extended its ban on open burning until at least Oct. 15. The City of La Grande’s ban is in effect until at least
