Two lovingly landscaped lots were recently given La Grande Beautification awards.

The Potter’s House and the home of Susan Coughlan each were awarded for the upkeep and beauty they add to the city through their landscaped properties.

The city gives out two awards each year, one for residential and one for commercial property.

“I do work at Eastern Oregon Nursery and Landscape, so that helps,” Coughlan said.

She spends about an hour a day in her N Avenue yard pulling weeds and watering.

“I love working with plants. I didn’t mean for this to happen (to win an award),” Coughlan said. “I just enjoy gardening.”

One of her favorite things in her garden is lavender, a lot of which has not bloomed yet. Coughlan also pointed out bright  golden privet bushes. She said she focuses on bringing a variety of color and texture to her lawn, while at the same time making it easy to maintain.

“A lot of this is easy care,” she said.

Judy Jensen, of The Potter’s House, said she’s no gardening expert and just likes doing it.

She spends about five or six hours a week in her garden but also has a high school student help with things like pulling weeds. Her husband, Bob, helps water, she said.

“I love foxgloves,” Jensen said. “They’re Victorian, so I think that’s why I like them.”

She also has an affinity for roses and likes to keep pink and purple in her landscaping. Other favorites include daisies, larkspurs and columbines.

“I try to plant things for hummingbirds,” but she has not had much luck with that, Jensen said.

More than anything, Jensen said she likes to keep her garden in sync with the look of her home.

“Victorian is the key,” she said. “That’s what I like.”
