ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 237 SENDS 3 TO HOSPITAL
COVE Two Cove teen-agers and an adult passenger sustained injuries Wednesday afternoon when their vehicles collided about three miles northwest of here on Highway 237.
According to an Oregon State Police accident report, Carrie Pereira, 17, was driving a 1995 Dodge Stealth toward Island City just before 3 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle in a sweeping left curve in the road.
As her vehicle spun, its right rear portion struck a 1987 Nissan pickup truck in the left front area. The pickup, headed toward Cove, was driven by Vanessa Thomas, 19.
Pereira and Thomas were taken on backboards to Grande Ronde Hospital, where Pereira was treated and released. Thomas was admitted and kept overnight, but will probably be released today, a nursing supervisor said this morning.
Thomass passenger, Shawn Kite, 32, also of Cove, struck his head on the windshield, but
wasnt admitted to the hospital. It isnt known if Thomas and Kite were wearing safety belts.
Both vehicles, the OSP reported, were heavily damaged and came to a stop in a field off the south side of the highway.
While the accident is under investigation, excessive speed and loss of control by Pereira is suspected as a cause, police said. Citations could be pending, depending on the results of the investigation.
