WINTERY SPRING: Tiffany Tobias scrapes ice and snow off of her windshield this morning before heading off to the ODS School of Dental Sciences in La Grande where she is a student. The Observer/PHIL BULLOCK Northeast Oregon woke up to a fresh coating of snow and winterlike temperatures this morning — record-setting temperatures, in fact.
La Grande residents saw about 2 inches of snow on the ground this morning and a record low temperature of 18 degrees at the airport. The previous record for April 21 was 25 degrees.
In town, the overnight low was recorded at 19 degrees.
The previous snow record for the date was 1 inch.
Joseph posted a low of 15 degrees this morning, according to the National Weather Service.
So what is the latest in the year that Union County has ever received substantial snowfall?
No one is certain. However, old Eastern Oregon Livestock Show reports indicate that Union County has received significant snow as late as June.
The first day of the 1914 EOLS in early June was canceled because of heavy snowfall, according to an article in the June 6, 1954, Walla Walla Union Bulletin. Snowfall was also heavy the second scheduled day, but the show went on.
Northeast Oregon isn’t the only part of the Northwest that is seeing January conditions in April.
The weather service says the cold snap would continue for another day or two, especially along the Columbia River Gorge and the southern Oregon coast.
In Pendleton, the weather service has warned Eastern Oregon farmers to ‘‘harvest or protect tender vegetation’’ and advised homeowners to cover potted plants or bring them indoors.
A freeze warning was also issued for much of southwest Oregon, from Reedsport to Ashland and over to Brookings.
