BLAZE SCORCHES BLM LAND

VALE For more than four hours Friday, Bureau of Land Management firefighters and Vale Rural Fire Department firefighters worked in hot weather to control a 332-acre fire.

The fire was on the east side of Lytle Boulevard in the Keeney Pass area, nine miles southeast of Vale.

According to the Al Crouch of the Vale District Office of the BLM in Vale, firefighting crews began working to combat the fire at 8:40 a.m. It took until 1 p.m. to control the fire.

The fire threatened historic Oregon Trail routes and one structure before crews were able to gain the upper hand. Dry, thick grass and sagebrush, combined with hot weather and gusty winds, created control problems. Several units of engines, heavy equipment and a hotshot crew quickly jumped on the fire aided by air tankers and a helicopter.

By Friday afternoon, the BLM office said that by this morning fire crews would have the fire under

control.

The Lytle Ffire was caused by humans, but it wasnt known what specifically caused the fire. Arson is suspected, but the fire is currently unter investigation.
