BRIEFLY: CHD flu clinics set for this week

Three flu vaccine clinics will be conducted this week at the Center for Human Development, 2301 Cove Ave.  Following are the days and times:

• 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday 

• 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday

• 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday

Chamber sponsors ‘Guys & Dolls’ opener 

ELGIN — The Elgin Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring opening weekend of the upcoming production “Guys & Dolls” at the Elgin Opera House Friday and Saturday.

When groups of 10 or more purchase tickets, each group member will receive a free popcorn. Just mention “Elgin Chamber.”

DAR sets annual Christmas meeting 

ISLAND CITY — The annual Christmas meeting of the Lone Pine Tree Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be Friday at the Island City City Hall, at 10605 Island Ave. (behind Island Express Lube and Car Wash.)  A meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. and a potluck luncheon at noon.

Child care provider class set Thursday

A class, Child Care Division Overview, will run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Child Care Resource & Referral classroom (employment office), 1901 Adams Ave. This class is required to become a registered family child care provider. The class is free and open to the public. To register or for more information, call 541-963-7942, ext. 22, or 1-800-956-0324, ext. 7.

Football cooperative focus of board 

UNION — Discussion of a proposed football cooperative arrangement with the Cove School District is the purpose of a special Union School Board meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The meeting will be at the Bobcat Athletic Complex, 800 Dearborn St. There will be time for community input and discussion. No decisions will be made at this meeting.

The school board will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Action items include hiring a junior high girls basketball coach and a varsity baseball coach as well as the football cooperative sponsorship with Cove for 2014-2016.

Library offers Holiday Open House

UNION — The Union Carnegie Library is having a Holiday Open House from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. People can get pictures with Santa, enjoy refreshments and get in on the last chance to buy raffle tickets for Christmas trees and other prizes. 

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Union Carnegie Library.

Santa Claus Mall will take place Saturday

Santa Claus Mall will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Riveria Activity Center. People are encouraged to bring their cameras to take pictures with Santa.

Union County Educators meet 

The Union County Educators will meet at Dusty Spur, corner of Greenwood Street and S Avenue, on Wednesday.  The Union County Ukulele group will perform. 

The meeting starts at 11:30 a.m. with orders taken and then the program. 

All interested people who want to learn about the benefits of Retired Educators and volunteerism are welcome to attend.

PFLAG holiday party set for Sunday

This month’s Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays meeting and holiday party will be at 
2 p.m. Sunday at Shelter From the Storm, 111 Fifth St.

People are asked to bring a food item to share.

La Grande School Board will meet

Common Core state standards will be one subject discussed when the La Grande School Board meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Willow Elementary School conference room.
