Farmers’ Market opens May 17
Fresh local produce will return to La Grande at the Farmers’ Market opening day May 17. Market Manager Beth Wasley announced at the market’s annual meeting Thursday night that there won’t be any major changes to the market this year. Chef at the Market, which debuted its cooking demonstrations last season, will return as will annual events such as Kid Day. The board may revert back to closing Tuesday markets at 6 p.m. rather than at 6:30 p.m. like last year.
During the annual report, Wasley said the market lost money last year — $3,700 — likely due to spending. Attendance was down in 2013 for Tuesday markets.
This season, with the help of Oregon Rural Action, the market hopes to gather hard numbers via rapid market assessments. This will help organizers determine the economic health of the market.
