A home at 61822 Riddle Road in La Grande was heavily damaged by fire Sunday, with crews from three local departments responding to put out the blaze.

According to a report from the La Grande Rural Fire Department, West Road resident Wayne Baldwin spotted the fire as he was driving by about 6:25 a.m.. Baldwin contacted 9-1-1.

La Grande Rural Fire sent an engine, a tender and 10 firefighters to the scene. The City of La Grande responded with an engine and a crew, as did the Union fire department.

Capt. Randy Chandler of La Grande Rural Fire was riding the first engine on the scene. He reported heavy smoke coming from the residence and directed the initial attack.

The house was ventilated with help from the City of La Grande crew and the fire was suppressed. Flame damage was limited to the kitchen and bedroom areas but the rest of the house and contents were heavily damaged by heat and smoke.

Jim Voelz of La Grande Rural Fire said the house, which belongs to Clinton and Toiresa Troyer, probably will be a total loss.

The owners were not at home at the time of the fire and were notified later. No injuries were reported.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was to be conducted today by a deputy state fire marshall.
