COMMUNITIES REMEMBER 9-11
Several ceremonies, services, a parade and a concert in Union will mark the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Announcements about Wednesday's events are listed below.
Fire station hosts memorial
A ceremony of remembrance will begin at 7 a.m. at La Grande's new fire station, 1806 Cove Ave.
Firefighters and law enforcement, military and forestry personnel are all requested to arrive at the station at 6:30 a.m.
Remembrance parade set
Participants in a memorial parade are asked to wear red, white and blue as students and local police and firefighters commemorate the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at First Street and C Avenue. The parade route will be McAlister Road to Beeman Park, where there will be a short ceremony by Mayor Dale Delong and the performance of patriotic music.
Minister featured in video
The Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2702 Adams Ave., will combine a prayer service at 7 p.m. with a showing of the video "My House Shall be Called a House of Prayer" featuring the pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, Jim Cymbala.
Hope focus of service
Summerville Baptist Church will have a memorial service of hope beginning at 7 p.m.
Faith Center prays for nation
The Faith Center, 10300 D St., Island City, will begin a memorial service at 6:30 p.m to pray for the nation.
VFW observes Patriot Day
The High Valley VFW Post will conduct a brief memorial service at the Union Park beginning at 8 a.m. to commemorate Patriot Day as proclaimed by the president. Coffee and cookies will be served at the VFW Hall, 518 Main St., after the ceremony.
St. Peter's open for prayer
St. Peter's Episcopal church will be open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in memory of Sept. 11. The Rev. William Gregg will offer a prayer service from 5:30 to 6 p.m.
Methodists reflect on 9-11
The United Methodist Church, 1612 Fourth St., will have a time of quiet, personal reflection from noon to 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Janet Farrell.
Presbyterians offer service
La Grande's Presbyterian Church will have a 9-11 remembrance service at 6:30 p.m. The prayer labyrinth in the friendship center will be open for meditative walks at 7 p.m.
9-11 concert set Wednesday
A Sept. 11 Remembrance Concert will be presented at Union High School.
The free concert begins at 7 p.m. in the high school gym. The concert was organized by Union High School sophomore Tonya Gilmore.
