COUNCIL RULES ON FUNDS
By The Observer
The La Grande City Council has awarded $17,628 to the Union County Economic Development
The money will help support two staff positions for people working on job creation or job retention in the county, the UCEDCs application said.
The council Wednesday rejected three other requests for funds from the transit room tax collected by the city, saying the requests did not meet the criteria.
Several years ago, the council decided it would stop funding social services requests from the room tax.
The requests this week were for $20,000 from Community Connection of Northeast Oregon to support a new building for the Kids Club program, $5,000 from Union County Court Appointed Special Advocates to help train volunteers for the state-mandated program to assist abused children, and $5,000 from a group hoping to re-create the historical Cast Iron Mary statue.
A previous council resolution mandates that the funds go for emerging economic development opportunities.
The UCEDC request stated it was seeking $1.43 per capita from all cities in the county to fund, in a public/private partnership, our operational budget for the fiscal year 2001-2002.
