'HOME' DESTROYED: Elgin firefighters battle the fire that burned down the Shaffer family's shop and motorhome Thursday afternoon. (The Observer/KELLY WARD).

ELGIN Firefighters from Elgin and Imbler worked together Thursday afternoon to put out an intense shop fire.

The fire burned the shop, owned by Jack and Georgia Shaffer at 370 N. 17th St. The Shaffers were living in a motor home in the shop until they could move into a new double-wide home that would be installed on the property.

The shop and its contents were a total loss, the Elgin Fire Department reported.

The Shaffers were getting permits to set up their new double-wide, and were staying with all their belongings in the motor home and shop. They are now living with a son in Summerville.

Their neighbor, Derv Fortenberry, said this morning that Georgia Shaffer told him she had only been gone from the motor home about an hour and a half Thursday. A neighbor reported seeing smoke, and flames were visible when Shaffer returned home.

All the couples belongings and household items were being stored in the shop following the sale of their home in Elgin, including the paperwork for permits at the property and the purchase of their new home.

The Elgin Fire Department had four trucks and 17 firefighters, along with a pumper and crew from Imbler fighting the fire for about three hours.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
