COVE CLEANS UP THIS WEEKEND
COVE Daffodils are blooming in Cove, so it must be time for sprucing up the community.
"Everybody just gets together," says this year's organizer, Denise Sheasly, of all the people in the community who pitch in to make the cleanup day happen.
Saturday, she said, there will be teen-agers out picking up roadside trash and putting it in the bright Oregon Department of Transportation highway bags, local contractors picking up and sorting out the scrap metal, and others standing by to help with the awkward loads.
The center of activity will be at Cove City Hall from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dumpsters will be available to haul trash away, and tables inside will have coffee and cocoa, and later water and soda pop, to keep the cleaners energized.
"We want the stuff you can't get rid of in garbage cans," Sheasly said.
Old cars and old farm equipment are welcome, as are defunct appliances, tires without rims and batteries. The cleanup crews cannot, however, deal with any toxic chemicals, including old paint, waste oil or yard chemicals, Sheasly said.
"We get some really strange stuff," she added. Old docks have been brought to the cleanup sites in the past, as have rolls of fencing, fence posts and antique farm equipment.
In the spirit of community, there are several families ready to pick up and help out anyone who needs help in getting their trash to the collection sites. Those needing assistance can call 568-4846, 568-4737, 568-4625 or 568-5083.
