City budget looks solid for 2014-15

No cuts slated for upcoming budget

ISLAND CITY — The 2014-15 budget picture for the City of Island City looks bright.

The city is set to adopt a budget of about $4.5 million, one which would be up about 3 percent from the current years budget of $4.409 million.

The budget calls for no personnel, program or service cuts.

“We feel good about the budget. We have no problems, everything looks good,” Island City Mayor Dale De Long said.

Expenditures for the city’s water fund represent the biggest portion of the budget at about $3.5 million. The fund includes about $3 million for a water system improvement project.

The money is for capital work the city hopes to receive in the form of a loan from USDA Rural Development, a federal agency, to finance the water project.

Island City has not had budget problems in recent years.

“We have a history of being able to stay within our means,” De Long said.

De Long said during the nearly 24 years he has been mayor, Island City has never had any budget problems.

Island City Public Works Director Judy Rygg credits the lack of problems to limited expenses.

“We do not have a lot of overhead,” Rygg said.

She noted, for example, that Island City’s law enforcement is not provided directly by the city. Island City has a contract with the Union County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement.

Island City’s proposed budget was approved by the City of Island City’s budget committee on Monday. The city council will vote on adoption of the budget at its April 14 meeting. A budget hearing will be conducted prior to the council’s vote the night of the meeting.
