Collision near Baker City claims two lives

BAKER CITY — Two Baker City residents died when a motorcycle and a car collided on Highway 30 about five miles north of Baker City Saturday.

The motorcycle rider, Timothy Hunt, 47, and a passenger in the car, Christia Marie Scotton, 27, died at the scene, police said.

Officers from the Baker County Sheriff’s Department, Oregon State Police and the Baker City Fire Department were dispatched to the crash at 4:48 p.m.

Police said the preliminary investigation showed that a 1997 Subaru Impreza driven by Katherine Knox, 48, of Haines was traveling north on Highway 30 when it veered across the road into the southbound lane where three motorcycles, including Hunt’s, were traveling.

Hunt’s 2007 Honda motorcycle collided with the right side of Knox’s car as the car crossed the center line, police said.

The accident happened near the highway’s junction with Pole Line Road, about half a mile north of Chandler corner.

Hunt was wearing a helmet and Scotton was wearing a seat belt when the vehicles collided, police said.

Knox was flown by air ambulance to St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise with serious injuries, police said. An update of her condition was not available in time for this report.

Two other passengers in the Subaru, Gryphen Myers, 4, and Rylee Myers, 2, both of Haines, were taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Health Services with minor injuries, police said.

Knox was wearing her seat belt, the Myers children were using “appropriate restraints,” and the car’s air bags were activated by the crash, police said.
