Cove School Board ratifies two-year teacher contract

COVE — Cove School District teachers will receive base salary increases of 1 and 1-1/2 percent over the next two years under a new two-year contract ratified by the school board Tuesday.

Terms of the pact call for teachers to receive a raise in their base pay of 1 percent in 2012-13 and 1-1/2 percent in 2013-14.

Teachers will not receive an increase in what the district will pay for their health insurance premiums in 2012-13. The district will pay $1,100 a month for health insurance premiums in 2012-13 for each full-time teacher, the same amount it previously had provided.

The contract does have a re-opener clause that will allow health insurance benefits to be re-negotiated for 2013-14.

Meg Moore, chair of the Cove School Board, said that negotiations went very well, describing them as “amicable.’’ Moore said most of the details of the contract had been agreed upon by early September.

Erich Dressen, a member of the bargaining team for the Cove teachers, also said he feels good about how the contract negotiations went.

“It is nice to have the funding and a little pay increase is always nice,’’ said Dressen, who teaches grades 6-8 in the school district and recently served as president of the Cove teachers union, the Cove Education Association.

The district’s previous contract with its teachers expired June 30.

The salary schedule for full-time teachers in 2012-13 will range from $31,188 to $58,320. The Cove School District has 18 teachers.

The Cove School Board also voted Tuesday to give high school principal and district special education director Mat Miles a pay increase. The board voted to boost Miles’ salary by 1 percent in 2012-13 and 1-1/2 percent in 2013-14.

Miles is in his second-year as CHS principal and district special education director.

He previously worked as an administrator for the La Grande School District for 11 years.
