Oregon State Police troopers from the La Grande Area Command office are continuing an investigation into an early Thursday morning single vehicle fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of an Elgin man on Highway 204 about three miles west of Elgin.
The OSP said that about at 3:40 a.m., a 1989 Chevrolet pickup driven by Troy D. Templeton, age 44, was northbound on Summerville Road at a high rate of speed when his vehicle traveled through the T-intersection at Highway 204, went airborne and crashed into an embankment.
The pickup, with the driver inside, caught fire and was totaled. Templeton was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators haven't confirmed yet if he was using safety restraints.
Firefighters from the Elgin Fire Department and OSP troopers responded to the scene. Trooper Grant Jackson is the lead investigator.
