The Union County Sheriff's Office and medical personnel responded to this crash on Hunter Road south of Monroe Lane Wednesday morning. Royce Irby, 89 of Summerville, the driver of the car, was transported to Grande Ronde Hospital, then transferred to another facility. Timothy Samples, the City of La Grande employee driving the pick-up, was not injured.
An 89-year-old Summerville man was hurt and a City of La Grande employee escaped injury in a two-vehicle crash on Hunter Road in rural Union County Wednesday.
Capt. Craig Ward of the Union County Sheriff's Office said that about 10 a.m., a Ford pick-up truck owned by the city and driven by building department employee Timothy Samples had its blinker on and was attempting to make a left turn off Hunter about a quarter mile south of Monroe Lane. Coming from behind and traveling in the same direction was a Chevrolet Equinox driven by Rocye Irby, 89, of Summerville. Irby pulled out to pass the truck.
Ward said the vehicles collided, slid off the road and knocked over a mailbox before coming to rest in a yard.
Ward said Samples, 42, of La Grande, claimed no injuries and was not transported. Irby, however, was taken by ambulance to Grande Ronde Hospital with undetermined injuries.
Wednesday afternoon, Grande Ronde Hospital said Irby was treated, then transferred to another facility. Other details of his condition were not immediately available.
