The Northeast Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center received more reports of lightning- and human-caused fires Tuesday and Wednesday. Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and Oregon Department of Forestry firefighting resources contained most of the fires by Thursday. Fire crews are mopping up the 9.6-acre Bear Gulch Fire, on Dead Horse Ridge west of Hells Canyon in Wallowa County. Thursday afternoon, the dispatch center reported the fire, which burned in grass and timbered stringers, at 100 percent contained. “Crews have made headway,” said Nate Goodrich, fire management officer of the Wallowa-Whitman’s Wallowa Fire Zone. “The fire should be secure by (Thursday night).” Mop-up work was slated to be completed today, according to the dispatch center. Other incidents, all reported at 100 percent containment Thursday, included a 0.01-acre, lightning-sparked fire a mile south of Enterprise on ODF land; a 0.01-acre blaze caused by an abandoned campfire at Buck Point off Hat Point Road in the Wallowa Valley Fire Zone; a quarter-acre, human-caused fire in the Burnt Powder Fire Zone and ODF land off Highway 26; a lightning-caused spot fire at Swamp Creek in the Wallowa Valley Fire Zone; and a half-acre, lightning-caused burn at Table Rock Mountain in the Burnt Powder Fire Zone. ODF has officially declared fire season on private lands, with special restrictions in place. Visit www.odf.state.or.us/areas/eastern/northeast/default.asp for details.
