DETENTION CENTER DEDICATED
Back in December it appeared that the Oregon Youth Authority's new $4.4 million youth detention center at Hilgard would be sitting empty for a while because funding for operating the new center wasn't included in Gov. John Kitzhaber's budget. But a concerted efforty by the OYA and local legislators resulted in sufficient funds being restored. Tuesday, the OYA celebrated with a ribbon-cutting. The center is intended to help transition juvenile offenders from correctional facilities back to their communities. The center will emphasize treatment and education, vocational training, transitional services, alcohol and drug education, gang and cultural diversity awareness, as well as parole readiness.
