DISASTER DRILL TESTS PREPAREDNESS
Bruce Weimer, left and Stan Grove of the La Grande Fire Department carry victim Laurie Hett, a La Grande High senior, to a triage area at a mock accident scene at Fourth Street and N Avenue Tuesday morning. The disaster drill, set up by the Grande Ronde Hospital, presented a scenario where a school bus carrying 14 students collided with a truck carrying an unknown hazardous material. Of the 14 victims, three had severe injuries, four suffered intermediate injuries, six were walking wounded and one person died. The drill was designed to test the GRH disaster plan, said GRH nurse K.J. Schrank, a GRH disaster plan committee member. This disaster drill has nothing to do with Sept. 11. Its something we have to do on an annual basis to make sure components (of disaster plan) are up to date, she said. Victims were from the LHS leadership class.
