Daugherty receives lifetime achievement award

One of Eastern Oregon University’s dedicated leaders has been recognized for his nearly 30-year career in higher education.

Mike Daugherty, dean of students and former director of residence life at EOU, is the recipient of the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northwest Association of College and University Housing Officers. The award recognizes Daugherty’s contributions throughout his career as a student housing professional, leader and mentor.

Daugherty received the award at a recent conference of the NWACUHO held in Vancouver, Wash. Institutions from Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Alberta and British Columbia are members of the association.

“Mike has dedicated his life to students and their success,” Stephen Jenkins wrote in a letter to the NWACUHO, nominating Daugherty for the award. “Mike represents the best parts of what it means to be a housing professional and educator.”

Jenkins took over the position of director of residence life when Daugherty retired in 2006. Words of support also came from Dixie Lund, EOU president, and others who have worked closely with Daugherty over the years.

“The fact that he (Mike) was willing to return to full-time employment from a comfortable retired life is evidence of his commitment to students and to their success,” Lund wrote in her letter of nomination.

Daugherty rejoined the university family last August as interim vice president for student affairs. During implementation of EOU’s Repositioning Plan, Daugherty’s position evolved into the current dean of students.

“I was surprised, deeply honored and very humbled by being named as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the NWACUHO,” Daugherty said. “Working with college students has enriched my life and I have been blessed with having outstanding mentors and colleagues throughout my professional life. I have many to thank and much to appreciate.”

During his tenure at EOU, Daugherty served in many capacities. He was interim dean of student affairs, oversaw the construction of three new residence halls and taught and mentored hundreds of student leaders through the residence life program.

Daugherty is also a 1974 Eastern graduate. He founded EOU’s Outdoor Program while still a student.

The program continues to thrive, providing classes, training and equipment to students to enjoy and explore the natural environment.
