Deputies shoot, kill man at campground

The Wallowa County District Attorney’s Office confirmed today that a man was shot dead by Sheriff’s deputies in a confrontation Wednesday afternoon on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.

The deceased suspect is identified as Roy S. Bass, 52. An autopsy is pending by the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office.

The shooting happened at Boundary Campground south of Wallowa along Bear Creek.

The names of of the officers involved in the shooting are Wallowa County Undersheriff Steve Rogers, 54, and Wallowa County Detective Neil Rogers, 44.

Steve Rogers has been with the sheriff’s office for nine years. He has 20 years experience as a law enforcement officer.

Neil Rogers has been with the sheriff’s office for nine years. He also has 20 years experience as a law enforcement officer.

No officers were injured during the incident.

According to a press release Thursday from Wallowa County District Attorney Mona Williams, officers from the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Federal Law Enforcement responded about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to a report that U.S. Forest Service employees had been approached  and menaced by a male subject with a handgun.

The subject produced a handgun and pointed it at the responding officers, according to Williams. He was shot and killed by Sheriff’s deputies, she said. No officers were hurt.

The OSP Forensic Services crime lab worked the scene on Thursday and are assisting with the investigation.

The investigation is being conducted by the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon State Police and the Major Crimes Team, which includes resources from various police agencies.

Williams said the investigation is being done in accordance with Oregon Senate Bill 111, which governs procedures in officer-involved shootings, and in accordance with the Wallowa County Use of Deadly Force Plan.

No other details were being released at press time.
