District, staff agree on new contracts
ELGIN — Teachers and classified staff in the Elgin School District are set to receive pay increases each of the next two school years.
The Elgin School Board Tuesday ratified two-year contracts, which will provide base pay increases of 2 percent in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Deb Horrell, president of the Elgin School District’s classified staff union, said negotiations with her bargaining team went well.
“They went smoothly, I’m very happy,” said Horrell, who is a teaching assistant at Stella Mayfield School.
Members of the classified staff also include custodians, secretaries and food service workers.
The contracts will also boost what Elgin’s teachers and classified staff both receive for health insurance premiums. The classified staff will receive $30 more a month in 2013-14 and another $30 per month in 2014-15 per month. Elgin’s teachers will receive $30 more per month for health insurance in 2013-14 and $20 more for health insurance in 2014-15.
Prior to Tuesday’s school board meeting, the school district’s budget committee met. The committee voted to recommend that the school board adopt a 2013-14 general fund budget of $4.24 million. The proposed budget would be up 14 percent from the 2012-13 budget of $3.72 million. Most of the increase would be made possible by a projected increase in state revenue of $384,481.
The Elgin School District’s proposed budget calls for almost two positions to be added — a full-time elementary school teacher, a half-time special education teacher and a part-time language arts and alternative education teacher.
The school board will vote on adoption of the budget at its June 26 meeting. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the boardroom of the district office building. The board will conduct a budget hearing prior to voting on adoption of the spending plan.
