Donated blue spruce graces Union Christmas

UNION At first, there was some doubt that the 30-foot Colorado blue spruce in Larry Marshalls front yard even wanted to be Unions Christmas tree.

First one chainsaw broke. Then a borrowed chainsaws chain broke. Finally, a third saw was able to bring down the tree Saturday morning.

Working to get the tree down were Red James, Ray McDaniel, Dan Spradlin and Jim Kennedy, many of whom had helped cut another front-yard tree a year ago.

This years tree was donated by the Marshalls, who chose not to watch it be cut Saturday. McDaniel planned to take the tree from the Marshalls front yard to its final set up in downtown Union later Saturday.

The tree will be decorated in coming days, with Santa turning on the lights to kick off the holiday season just after 5 p.m. Saturday.

The tree will stand something less than 30 feet high after its base is trimmed to fit in a permanent holder. It is estimated to be about 30 years old.

For the Marshalls, saying good-bye to the tree will take some adjusting, since the wide tree blocked almost their entire view of Fir Street from their homes front window.

Deb Spradlin, with Unions Re:Union, helped arrange for the trees donation and admits shes already on the lookout around Union for next years community tree.

Spradlin hopes the beauty of the blue spruce inspires others in Union to put together a Christmas lighting display.

A residential lighting contest is being sponsored by Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative with cash prizes given after judging between Dec. 15 and 20. Anyone who would like to be sure their display in or around Union is judged should pick up an entry form at OTEC before the judging begins.

A commercial lighting contest in Union will also involve a cash prize, given by the communitys Commercial Club.
