E. Wash. fires probable cause of thick smoke

The thick haze that settled over the Grande Ronde Valley Monday likely was due to smoke from regional wildfires. Jessica Lindley, environment/regulatory superintendent for the city of La Grande, said the smoke was probably from wildfires, primarily those in Eastern Washington. As of this morning, La Grande had a “moderate” air quality rating for fine particulate matter, as did Cove and Baker City. In the Wallowa Valley, Enterprise had a “good” rating. A moderate air quality rating is considered acceptable, although it may affect individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Lindley said today’s rain showers, coupled with what appears to be good air movement, should help improve air quality. “That should clean it up somewhat because the rain droplets will drag down some of the particulate matter,” she said.
